Fighting cancer isn’t just a struggle of the body. It’s also a fight with the heart, and the soul, and the spirit. The non-profit organization Elizabeth’s Canvas has been helping with that struggle by providing cancer patients, survivors, and their family members with art, photography, dance, and writing classes, at no charge, so that they can better cope with their symptoms and improve their well-being. Elizabeth’s Canvas classes are offered inside and outside hospitals, and are grounded in the belief that the creative process can strengthen the spirit and empower the mind.
Now, Elizabeth’s Canvas, IDW Publishing and Blastoff have come together to create this graphic novel, in which comic creators from across the industry interview the people behind the struggle with cancer — the patients, the nurses, the survivors, the researchers – and tell their stories, tales of defiance, perseverance, dedication and triumph.  All proceeds from the sale of the graphic novel will go to further fund and grow Elizabeth’s Canvas’ efforts.

“Dark Genesis.” While working on a restorative formula (that can make forests out of deserts) in the Louisiana swamps, scientist Alec Holland is killed by a bomb set off by Mr. E., who wants the formula. Shortly thereafter, a humanoid plant being rises from the swamp, created from the body of Holland, the chemicals in the formula, and the strange forces in the swamp. 1st appearance of Alec and Linda Holland. 1st appearance of Matt Cable. (Swamp Thing himself first appeared in House of Secrets 92). Script by Len Wein, art and cover by Berni Wrightson. Includes brief bios of Wein and Wrightson.

A series that borrows many concepts from Planet of the Apes, Kamandi takes place in an alternate future where animals have mutated into bipedal beings of intelligence and where humans are treated like savage beasts. Kamandi avenges the death of his grandfather, who was killed by wolves, but is then captured by a tiger named Caesar, who turns him over to dog-scientist Dr. Canus. Canus proceeds to help Kamandi, and this is where the so-called last boy on earth hooks up with Ben Boxer, a mutated human who can turn to living metal.

Jiz Comics is one of the notorious underground sexually explicit comics that were produced between 1968 and 1969. This 1st printing has the signature thin black horizontal lines printed near the bottom of many of the interior pages. There is also a front-cover tell that identifies this 1st printing. Near the top of the inside of the letter “I” in “JIZ” is a faint blue-green horizontal line that is about 1/4 inch long. This is a RARE find and the fact that it comes from the Ellison collection makes it all the more desirable.
