I Love the Parts You Never Saw

When Jud and I opened BLASTOFF seven years ago, it was important to us to be a different kind of comic-book store. And we’d often be complimented about our store’s appearance, which was certainly gratifying. But we wanted to be different not merely in appearance and practice, but in philosophy.

In my many years of working with American Honda, I was always struck by a statement by its founder Soichiro Honda about his company, that his goal was always for Honda Motor Company to be “a company that society wants to exist.” A laudable goal, and one that we would try to emulate.

Ever since the first day we opened our doors, every month we donated a portion of all BLASTOFF proceeds to a different charity or nonprofit organization. Some of them were important to one of us personally, sometimes one of our employees would bring us a cause they would like to support, sometimes we would actively go looking for new causes that could use our assistance.

Take a look at the list below of charities and nonprofits that were the recipients of our assistance. And think about the books and comics you bought at BLASTOFF.

With every dollar you spent, you helped feed hungry children. You helped conduct research to cure cancer, and give much-needed support to the families of the ailing. You helped teach kids to read, and provided books where there weren’t any. You supported the local high-school basketball team, and helped families on the other side of the continent recover from hurricanes. You made sure there were toys for kids at Christmas, and fought for cleaner air and water for all of us.

You helped us try to make the world a better place, all of you. Thanks.
