The Doctor Is In

By Scott Tipton

I hope you’ll forgive a relatively rare bit of self-promotion this week, as I’m very pleased to talk about one of my favorite projects, which is suddenly and unexpectedly back in the spotlight. A couple of years back, following the success of our STAR TREK/DOCTOR WHO crossover series, my brother and co-writer David and I got the chance to write the official comics celebration of the 50th anniversary of DOCTOR WHO, a 12-issue maxiseries we called PRISONERS OF TIME. Not only did we get the chance to write all of the Doctors then established, we got to work with some of the best and most influential artists who ever handled the character, folks like Simon Fraser, Lee Sullivan, Mike Collins, Gary Erskine, Philip Bond, John Ridgway, Kev Hopgood, Roger Landridge, David Messina, Elena Casagrande, Matthew Dow Smith and Kelly Yates, all under amazing covers by Francesco Francavilla and Dave Sim.

Not long after the series ended, our publisher, IDW, lost the rights to the DOCTOR WHO license (a not uncommon thing in this business), and within a year or so, the book was no longer in print, which, to be honest, really bummed me out. I’m incredibly proud of this book, the longest and most ambitious story we’ve ever done.  We got to take the Doctor and his companions on adventures we never dreamed we’d get the opportunity to do.

We introduced the First Doctor to Thomas Huxley, a.k.a. “Darwin’s Bulldog”…

We sent the Second Doctor and his companions to the galaxy’s largest shopping mall…

We arranged for the Third Doctor to cross paths with Richard Milhouse Nixon…

We invited the Fourth Doctor, Leela and K-9 to dinner with the Judoon…

We dropped the Fifth Doctor and his companions in the middle of a Sontaran war…

We led the Sixth Doctor, Peri and Frobisher into a deadly trap…

We confronted the Seventh Doctor and Ace with a most unwelcome houseguest…

We brought the Eighth Doctor and Grace together for one more adventure…

We had the Ninth Doctor and Rose contend with a mysterious charmer with eyes for Miss Tyler…

We sent the Tenth Doctor and Martha to 1950s Tinseltown…

We tasked the Eleventh Doctor on a quest for his greatest failure…

And then we got to do what no one else has ever done. We got to team them all up.

And now, thanks to the good folks at Titan Comics, PRISONERS OF TIME is back on store shelves as of today in an all-new paperback edition. Which pleases me to no end.

If you’re a DOCTOR WHO fan (or even if you’re not, trust me), I hope you’ll give it a look.
